    TREMONT SERVICE BUREAU
    Tremont Experiment
"For some months, with little public attention, an experiment in co-ordinating social welfare and community agencies has been conducted with success in
the Tremont area.  It is the Tremont Service Bureau, a new arm of the Welfare Federation of Cleveland.  Thursday, when open house is held at the
Tremont Center on W. 14th Street, the public will be given the opportunity to learn of its work.  Interest in the experiment extends far beyond Cleveland.
Social workers elsewhere are following its activities, seeing in it the type of organization that will be used in the future to bring the greatest service to the
    greatest number of people.

"Such agencies as the associated Charities, Humane Society, Children's Bureau, Catholic Big Sisters, etc., are brought together.  Governmental bureaus
like the state division of aid for the aged and the probation departments of Municipal and Common Pleas Courts are also here.  The resources and the
direction for every type of community need are immediately at hand.  Instead of the people being forced to wander from one central bureau and agency to
another, all are centralized in the neighborhood."

Hundreds Inspect Tremont Center:  View New Setup to Centralize Social Agencies.
"Tremont Center, where an experiment in centralization of all social agencies of the district is in progress, was visited by several hundred at its first open
    house yesterday.

"The Center, which consists of two adjoining remodeled Victorian houses at 2337 W. 14th Street and 1208 Kenilworth Avenue, S. W., is expected to spare
families with problems the headaches of being sent from one agency to another, when a question of jurisdiction is involved and to prevent overlapping of
    services.

"'For instance, if Mr. and Mrs. Y are not in accord and their children, John and Mary, don't get their milk and spinach regularly, there will be no fine point as
to whether the problem be that of Associated Charities, a family agency, or that of Children's Bureau,' William De Laney, case worker, explained.
'Everything can be taken care of  here by the Tremont service bureau.'

"This bureau will combine the services of the agencies named, the Humane Society, the Girls' Bureau, the Catholic Big Sisters and the home service of
Goodwill Industries.  Other offices of these agencies in the Tremont district will be closed.

"'The idea is to see whether these agencies in co-operation can't do a better job in servicing the neighborhood,' Miss Katherine Clark, head of the service,
    said.

"The bureau is housed in the upstairs part of the W. 14th Street building.  Downstairs, Miss Mary Franko, visiting nurse, explained that she would have
office hours from 1 to 2 daily, so that citizens would know where to find her.  John S. Becka, probation officer of Juvenile Court, will be there to advise boys
    every Saturday morning.

"Miss Margaret Barrett, nurse, explained to visitors the well babies' clinic where mothers can bring young children for examination and weighing.

"In the Kenilworth Avenue building, the new headquarters of the Merrick House Day Nursery, Miss Helen Phelan conducted visitors through the newly
decorated rooms, where the curtains had large brightly colored numbers and letters appliquéd on them.  The furniture was red and blue and wooden
animals and little men dangled from the blinds.  Here 50 children can be cared for while their parents or guardians are working or otherwise engaged,
    Miss Phelan said.

"The centering of the neighborhood agencies is sponsored by the Welfare Federation of Cleveland as a result of its recent research (See Between Spires
and Stacks) which indicated that a single clearing house for needs and problems of  a section of a city would save time and money and would be far more
    convenient for the families."
